One of the most stunning abuses of federal power in recent years was the case of the government’s treatment of Nevada cattle rancher Cliven Bundy by Bureau of Land Management law officials. Bundy was charged with multiple felonies over a standoff with federal agents in 2014. But the seeming slamdunk case was thrown out in a mistrial after the judge found rampant prosecutorial misconduct, including six violations of trying to hide or refusing to turn over evidence favorable to Bundy’s case.
Now, the hunters have become the hunted, as two GOP lawmakers and Attorney General Jeff Sessions are launching investigations into the agents who mishandled the Bundy case as well as abuse and misconduct inside the BLM, which has enjoyed a lopsided conviction rate that’s now under suspicion. How appropriate that the Bureau of Land Management should be experiencing a much-needed draining of the swamp.
