Another day, another Jimmy Kimmel rant.  Ben Shapiro responds here.  Charles Cooke responds here.   Daniel Payne.  “You’re certainly entitled to your political opinion But that does not allow you to make things up to further your own political ends. For instance, you claim that “In June of last year, the NRA fought to make sure people on the no-fly list can buy guns.” This is a lie, plain and simple.

“What the NRA was fighting against last summer was not a provision barring people on the no-fly list from buying guns; it was a provision barring innocent Americans who had been placed on the terror watch list from buying guns. And they were right to stand against such a measure! The terror watch list is an overly broad, slapdash document that has regularly encompassed innocent American men and women who are guilty of no terrorist activity whatsoever.

“Maybe  you’re okay with innocent Americans losing their constitutional rights because they’ve been placed on an accountable secret government list for no reason. Most people aren’t, however; even the American Civil Liberties Union agreed with the NRA on this. You owe it to your audience to tell the truth about the matter.”

Of a piece with Kimmel is Keith Olbermann, who says the NRA should be branded ‘a terrorist organization.’  This is a reminder of how pointless this debate is: if one side is going to use emotion instead of facts to demand government DO SOMETHING whatever that thing is, and accuse their opponents of being terrorists, there’s very little conversation to be had. David Harsanyi runs through reasons why Nick Kristof’s eight different proposals would do nothing to stop mass shootings.

Jonathan Tobin wonders why liberal politicians don’t say what they really want to do: repeal the Second Amendment.  “The overwhelming majority of Americans support the right to bear arms guaranteed by the constitution. Even when they were using tragic incidents to demand more gun control, liberal politicians like former President Obama would keep telling us that they believed in the Second Amendment and didn’t want to take away guns from honest citizens. Yet every time they made such statements or began new efforts to pass more gun laws, gun purchases soared since many Americans believed they were lying about not wanting to let them keep their guns.”
