With Irene moving in, Uncle Sam needs to move out some assets. Irene will likely hit Kennedy Space Center either late tomorrow or early Sunday, but yesterday it was clear skies. So why not have a space launch? Yesterday, SpaceX lifted the Air Force’s secret X-37B into space. A few minutes later, the Dragon rocket landed back on the pad.

This is actually the fifth flight of the mysterious X-37, an unmanned spaceplane. We do know it goes up like a rocket and comes down like a plane. The last one landed in May after doing secret stuff in orbit for 718 days.

So we may not be able to do anything about the weather, or fund FEMA properly, but at least we’ve still got top secret robot spaceplanes.
