Why Has CS Featured The Todd Bentley-Rick Joyner Controversy On Our Site? Paul Cain And ‘The Prophetic’ Evaluated, Seaborn Hall, Common Sense Spiritual Life
CS Commentary, updated 1/14/20: From our previous reports on the Bentley ‘scandal’ we affirm the panel’s statement above. We won’t comment on Joyner’s entry except to say that – once again – no mention appears to be made of the victims in this, and that some of it comes across as a kind of ‘rambling’ mess that engages in a fair amount of self-justification. A lot of reader’s won’t appreciate that we’ve said this, but we are just trying to keep it ‘real.’ We were wrong previously to suggest that, perhaps, some of the Apostle Paul’s writings, like 2 Cor. 10-12 in particular, might come across in a similar fashion. Though some of his contemporaries did complain that Paul’s writings were ‘hard to understand’, we can’t compare Joyner’s diatribe here to them – and particularly not to 2 Cor. 10-12 which comes across as a clear, justifiable defense of Paul’s apostleship. That said, we don’t pretend to know what the Lord has said directly to Joyner or what pressures a leader at that level has to endure. At any level though, the panel’s conclusions – a panel initiated by Joyner through Michael Brown – have to be read as an affirmation of Powell’s initial warnings, and at least a partial, if indirect, indictment of Joyner’s handling of the affair. Our opinions and conclusions on the rest of the controversy and disagreements between Joyner and Powell, and others, which can be accessed beginning with this link, stand.

CS Commentary: We are not familiar with this site or author, but the evaluation here is up-to- date, and mostly objective, fair and helpful, even the excerpt from Cole’s upcoming book, Faith-Based Fraud. Cole’s findings are a good reminder for all believers in Charismatic circles to think through a higher level of Biblical criteria for evaluating leaders and ministers – and a challenge for all of us to exercise a higher level of discernment.
CS Commentary: Again, not familiar with the author or the site – and we don’t agree with everything here (like her environmental perspective) – but, it is good to read constructively critical reports from those either outside of your own stream or critical of it. The author has some valid warnings, questions, and some insightful things to say. One place we disagree is with her implied criteria for prophetic authority – that some prophetic voice should have prophesied about Soleimani’s recent death.
The prophetic voice is not about ‘prediction’ primarily, it is about turning God’s people back to Him (for more, see Evaluating Prophets And Prophecy). According to Amos 3:7, “Surely the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret counsel to His servants, the prophets.” Yes – but this verse, nor anywhere else, says that the prophet is required to announce everything to the people. In fact, the reverse. God talks to His ‘friends’ and shares with them information that He may not share with the people at large.
Perhaps a better challenge, or question, for someone who claims to be a genuine prophet would be, “Did God show you about Soleimani’s death before it happened? How?” And, “Why did you not share it at large before the event took place?” There are many reasons a genuine prophetic voice may not share a piece of information. Just one is that God may have restrained or instructed him or her from doing so.
